Chapter 20

Rein watched from his perch on a nearby log as Æydan kissed Brig goodbye. Knowing that acting on jealous impulse would serve no good purpose, he reined in the desire to knock Brig off his horse and repay him for what he'd done in the barn. Instead, he remained rooted to the log and shifted his gaze away from their goodbye, though not before noticing the firearm tucked into the waistband of Æydan's jeans.

Rein had thoroughly enjoyed Brig's attempt at threatening him before he left for Crawford. While his distaste for the boy was strong, he had to admit, Brig Cooper was no coward. He chuckled to himself as he listened to the sound of hooves fading in the distance, once again surprised by Brig and the gun Æydan now carried. The kid had come more prepared than Rein would have liked to have given him credit for.

He looked up to see Æydan watching him. She scowled at him, nervously tugging at her shirt in an attempt to hide the lump of metal that showed through her clothes, obviously uncomfortable with the weapon.

She turned and marched further away from him, plopping down in the grass, kicking her legs out in front of her. Sunlight shimmered in her hair, pulling out flecks of red that reminded Rein of her mother, Gemma.

After a moment, she flopped onto her back, sighing heavily, watching the sky. He knew she was mad at him, and he felt he probably deserved it. He'd startled her last night and had been rude to both her and Brig this morning. His refusal to help them by going into town was what she was most angry over though. That was obvious. While he felt certain Æydan wouldn't have run off if he'd volunteered to go, he didn't trust Brig not to force her to leave with him. He didn’t feel badly about making Brig go. After all, he was the only one who was going to benefit from sterilized water. Rein shook his head, once again astounded at the weakness of these under-mortals.

The thought crossed his mind that this would be an excellent opportunity to simply take Æydan and go. He didn't ponder the option long however. If at all possible, he preferred her to come with him willingly. He didn't want to force her to come if it could be avoided. And he still had a decent length of time to deal with the obstacle the boy presented. So, Rein chose to look at this pause in their trek as an opportunity to fill Æydan in on some things she needed to know before arriving in their world.

He stood and walked to where Æydan lay and lowered himself next to her in the grass, watching her quietly for a moment while she ignored him. Eventually, he cleared his throat, and said, "I'm sorry about last night."

Æydan continued ignoring him, still staring up at the sky. Rein wondered what she was looking at and glanced up. Fluffy white clouds lazily wandered past, the kind he would have spent hours finding shapes in as a kid.
